An Interview with Multi-Award Winning Wedding Videographer, Dan Pitman

In the world of wedding videography, there are a few individuals who truly stand out for their exceptional talent in capturing the magic of a couple's big day. Dan Pitman is undoubtedly one of those exceptional talents. With numerous awards under his belt and a portfolio filled with breath-taking wedding films, Dan Pitman has become a renowned name in the industry. This year, I have worked with Dan as a second shooter at some of his weddings, so I wanted to thank him by writing this blog and highlight his work to a wider audience. So, in this exclusive interview, I sit down with Dan to learn more about his journey, his creative process, and his passion for telling love stories through the lens.

The Man Behind The Lens

(1) Hey Dan, thank you so much for your time. Can you start us off by just mentioning who are you and what does your business offer?

Hey guys, so I’m Dan Pitman. I am a wedding videographer based in Dorset and I offer cinematic wedding films to artistic couples who want to remember their big day for years to come.

(2) I think you have a similar timescale to myself, but how long have you been in the wedding industry?

So, I’ve only been shooting weddings for two years, but in that time I’ve won three awards for my work, two of them being awarded best wedding videographer in south west England.

(3) That is mad, but many congratulations, especially on the awards in such short time! So, what were you doing before wedding videography?

I used to work in construction (roofing) for 15yrs, I’d been desperate to get out of it for a couple of years due to bad back and bad knees, but I couldn’t think of anything that I would enjoy doing that would still bring in a good income, until one day I watched a wedding film online and something clicked and I thought I would love to do it. I loved the emotion it made me feel and I didn’t even know the couple. I thought it would be an incredible rewarding job, so I just went for it. I brought an online course, and a month later I spent my life savings on camera equipment. My Mrs thought I was mad but it’s definitely paid off!

(4) To be honest, I think most wives think that when it comes to camera equipment! So, what do you love about wedding videography?

Touching on the above, my favourite part about this job is the feeling you get when you deliver a wedding film and the couple just send you a bunch of crying emojis telling you how much they love the film, there’s no feeling like it. Knowing that you’ve pieced together a story of the biggest day of their lives, and they have no idea how it will be told until they see the final film. There are so many parts of the day that are missed from their eyes and to be able to create memories for them in the form of video is just a great feeling!

“Wedding Reviews & Feedback….A Massive High”

(5) I must admit, feedback from clients is a massive high for me, honestly it feels great to know you’ve made a client happy. Anyway, why do you love doing it?

I love wedding videography because you get to meet so many great people, and it’s the best atmosphere to work in. Everyone is happy, you’re surrounded by love and laughter day in day out. I don’t think there’s a working environment that compares to working at a wedding, whatever the weather.

(6) Here, here! So, there are so many ways to skin a cat, but what is your style/approach to the work you do?

My style is most definitely cinematic, I create my films so they are dramatic, but romantic. I decided to sway away from the corny love songs you usually get in wedding films.

(7) Amazing, and from shooting with you and watching the films back you can definately get that style coming through. Last two questions now. Where can people find out more about your business?

So, the main platform to showcase my work would be Instagram @dan_doesweddings, but for all info on prices and packages you can visit my website www.danpitmanmedia.com

(8) Fantastic. Now, I love to ask this, because you can tell a lot about a person from the answer they give, but… If you had one meal for the rest of your life (3 meals a day), what would it be?

My top meal if I had to eat it for the rest of my life would be chicken paella.

(As long as it has chorizo, I’d take that!)
