Why having Chemistry with Your Wedding Photographer matters.
As a Somerset based wedding photographer, building a relationship and chemistry with my couples is really important to me. Your wedding day is a whirlwind of emotions, from the excitement of getting ready to the joy of exchanging vows and celebrating with loved ones. The day after you will feel like your big day has whizzed by, but your photographer plays a crucial role in capturing the magic and preserving timeless memories for you to share with generations to come. Whilst I think having good technical skills and artistic talent are essential qualities in hiring a wedding photographer, there's another huge factor that I think often goes overlooked but is equally important: chemistry.
Chemistry, or the connection and rapport between you and your photographer, can significantly impact the outcome of your wedding photos. I know for example with my couples that if I feel like they are more relaxed and can trust in what I am doing, then the day itself is going to be spot on. So, here is why building chemistry with your wedding photographer cannot be overstated:
A Natural & Authentic Atmosphere makes such a difference on Wedding Days
Comfort and Ease: Building a rapport with your photographer creates a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere on your wedding day. When you feel at ease in front of the camera and trust your photographer, it allows for more natural and authentic moments to be captured. For couples that feel less comfortable in front of camera I would encourage booking an engagement, or pre-wedding photoshoot. Not only is it a great chance for couples to meet me in person, but a perfect time to get experience in front of a camera, whilst also getting great photographs before the big day. It is not always essential, but a perfect ice breaker away from video calls, which I will explain next.
Build a Bonding Connection with Your Couples
Enhanced Communication: A strong connection between a couple and a photographer fosters open and effective communication. You'll feel more comfortable expressing your preferences, sharing your vision for the day, and communicating any specific shots or poses you'd like to capture. The way in which I approach creating an open dialogue with my couples, is by having video calls both pre-booking and pre-wedding. I also actively engage in email and messaging when appropriate. My door is always open too for couples to message whenever they have a question.
Wedding Photography Collaboration & Creativity
Better Collaboration: Chemistry with your photographer encourages collaboration and creativity. When you share a mutual understanding and appreciation for each other's ideas and perspectives, it leads to a more collaborative and enjoyable experience throughout the day. Whilst this is amazing stage to get to with your couples, I always stress that every wedding is different and by having certain shots in mind, they might not come to fruition on the day, but other more unique photographs might be created instead. But, by having that chemistry in place, will lead to a happy couple and the faith they have in you to deliver.
Engagement offers Opportunities Between Personalities & Style
Personalised Approach: A photographer who takes the time to get to know you as a couple can tailor their approach to your unique personalities and style. They'll be better equipped to capture the essence of your relationship and tell your love story in a way that feels authentic and true to who you are. Re-enforcing the steps I take from step 2, having plentiful opportunities to engage with couples allows for both parties to feel comfortable on their wedding day.
Genuine Moments & Wedding Day Emotions
Candid Moments and Emotions: Chemistry with your photographer allows for the genuine moments and emotions of your wedding day to shine through in your photos. From laughter and tears to stolen glances and heartfelt embraces, a photographer who understands your dynamic as a couple can capture these moments with sincerity and emotion. Imagine having made no connection with your photographer before your wedding day and when the time comes you meet the photographer for the first time. Like any first meet, it is awkward right? Well that sets the tone for the rest of the day and you are less likely to relax and your true emotions won’t come out. So it is always best to find a photographer that is very open with their communication.
Dedicated to Capturing the Moments That Matter
Peace of Mind: When you have a strong connection with your photographer, you can trust that they have your best interests at heart. You'll have peace of mind knowing that they're dedicated to capturing the moments that matter most to you and that they'll go above and beyond to deliver beautiful, heartfelt photos. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, I love working with people and I can also be seen brushing tears off my face during speeches. I genuinely love trying to get to know a couple first, take great photos second and then think about myself, even if that is sometimes forgetting to eat and drink.
A Lifetime of Memories Captured on Camera & Digitally Preserved Forever
Lasting Memories: The memories of your wedding day will be preserved through your photographs, and having a positive connection with your photographer ensures that those memories are captured in a way that reflects the love, joy, and emotion of the day. When you look back on your wedding photos, you'll not only see the beauty of the moments captured but also feel the connection you shared with your photographer. And, there is no better feeling as a photographer when your couple shares the moment they are looking through their online album, or when a thank you card comes through the post. I am always grateful for these moments.
In conclusion, the importance of chemistry with your wedding photographer cannot be overstated. Building a strong connection and rapport with your photographer enhances communication, fosters collaboration, and allows for more natural, authentic, and heartfelt moments to be captured on your special day. So take the time to find a photographer whose personality and approach resonate with you, and trust in the power of connection to create lasting memories that you'll cherish for a lifetime.
